Our title––GMT / CET––links to the temporal difference between these two capital cities: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)––the time zone in London; and Central European Time (CET)––the time zone in Paris.
After the unique set of challenges faced by many throughout the course of the pandemic, an occasion such as this may have seemed like a distant dream––a surreal one even––several months ago, and yet there is now this precarious belief that the worse may, in fact, be behind us.
Perhaps an exhibition held in two locations simultaneously is a quick attempt at grasping the normality of old that has ostensibly been returned to us. Will the artists and spectators that occupy these spaces view it with an optimism that the worst has passed? Or will they roam with trepidation, knowing that another lockdown is just beyond the horizon?
Whatever feelings you have about the immediate future, any gathering of people should indeed be cherished and welcomed. We believe that the art adorning the walls around you will provide a catharsis from the uncertainty; by not shying away from the problems but observing them through a critical lens––giving people a much-needed rest from blue hue illuminating from their digital devices and instead hopeful that you will become lost in a physical space.
If post-pandemic life has taught us anything, it's that the chance of a tangible encounter––one where a fellow human being may be beside you––should never be taken for granted.
